Entrepreneurs: The Next Generation

Young people running their own companies... Children turning their innovative ideas into business opportunities... These are just some of the exciting schemes being run by Yorkshire and the Humber LEGIs as part of their enterprise education programmes, enthusing the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Working in partnership with schools and colleges, our region’s LEGIs are engaging with local communities to deliver enterprise training programmes aimed at all ages. Local business and community leaders are providing hands on support through innovative events and competitions across the region.

By teaching students about enterprise and business, the LEGIs are preparing young people for the world of work.

Sheffield schools' Big Challenge

The Big Challenge 2010, a business competition for pupils to generate an idea and apply for a £25 microloan, saw more than 1,600 students engaged. As a result, 340 teams ran their own business for six months with a total £14k profit. This year, 60 entrepreneurs donated time to mentor students.

Pupils drawn to art enterprise

Wykebeck Primary School, Leeds, is in an area of social disadvantage. Children start with low levels of attainment and often other social/emotional difficulties. But Education Leeds’ Enterprise Business Partnership (EBP) unlocked artistic and entrepreneurial talent from the children, resulting in them selling nearly 300 cards to the local community.

Beauty student’s salon blossoms

Former Success Doncaster Enterprise College student, Elizabeth Hinchcliffe, won Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the Doncaster Business Awards. The award is presented to the outstanding individual, u30, who best demonstrates exceptional vision and leadership in the establishment and development of business. Elizabeth owns the BellaFiore Beauty Salon in Misterton.

The Oscars come to town

With the red carpet laid, Grimsby Town Hall, was home to the 2010 inc. Enterprise Oscars, attended by five schools, six teams, 36 students, parents, teachers and local business people. Awards were won for outstanding contribution to the challenge they took part in designing educational toys, television/radio adverts, business plans and more.

Youth energised by enterprise

Thousands of young people across the Bradford District are being energised by the power of enterprise. A team of Enterprise Enablers is taking the ‘Step Up’ project into the district’s 150-plus state primary schools and 29 secondary schools, as well as special schools, colleges and local communities.
