Fit for the Future

Local Enterprise Growth Initiatives (LEGIs) across the Yorkshire and the Humber region are working in partnership with businesses and organisations in order to release the economic and productivity potential of their communities. As we seek to rebalance the UK's economy, it is vital that local businesses are supported with the on-going advice they need to remain fit for the future.

Important manufacturing jobs have been secured, and 35 new jobs created, at Bradford's Acorn Stairlifts due to funding support provided by Bradford Kickstart. Not only has this business now got a solid future foundation for growth, the LEGI funding has included an important new skills programme through Train to Gain benefiting its existing and new employees.

Acorn Stairlifts story is echoed by that of Viv Parry's Exquisite Homemade Cakes who also needed assistance to take her business to the next level. Following a grant from Sharing the Success, Viv's Leeds-based business was able to take advantage of growing demand for her range of hand-finished, tray-baked cakes and was able to employ two more people from the local area.

Yorkshire and the Humber LEGIs also recognise that on-going advice and support is required if we are to create growing and sustainable businesses. Success Doncaster's enterprise programme has been able to support innovative business models such as Dean Kirkham's and Ross Cooney's Real Fitness business by providing start-up advice, an enterprise grant and on-going support from a business advisor. Not only is their business fit for the future, so are the people taking advantage of their personal fitness services and expertise!

Another business inspiring people to move is Grimsby-based MAPA (Masons Academy of Performing Arts). e-factor has offered business advice and funding to Anna Mason helping her to grow the academy. She is now up for a Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

These stories are important examples of the work carried out by motivated entrepreneurs who are making a real difference to their local economies. As we exit this long period of economic turbulence, it is vital that sound businesses such as the ones featured here are supported in the future so that they can continue to provide much needed jobs and community facilities and services for their local areas - Yorkshire and the Humber LEGIs will continue to do just that.
